The Alkan Air Flight Academy was established in 2016. With over 40 years in Yukon aviation, Alkan Air opened the flight school with a vision to provide opportunity to Yukoners to join our dynamic aviation industry in the North.
Mission Statment
Alkan Air Flight Academy is a professional flight school located in Canada’s North. Our guiding principle is to inspire people to achieve excellence in their chosen path in aviation. We provide high quality aviation education for both recreational and career pilots supported by experienced staff and advanced equipment and facilities. Our school culture balances fun and adventure with professionalism and safety for a relaxed but effective learning environment. Our unique location enables students to experience many types of flying experiences to create well rounded and capable pilots.

Lance AppleFord
Chief Flight Instructor/FTU Manager/Class I Instructor
Lance began his career in education in 1996, teaching English as a second language in Asia. Lance became a flight instructor in 2007, after many years of working as a pilot across Canada, including 4 years in 703. Lance spends his time at the Alkan Flight Academy managing the flight school, and teaching instructors and multi-ifr ratings.
Nicolas Doustaly
Class 4 Instructor/Multi Engine/Seaplane/Aerobatics
Nico is a bilingual pilot from France, he has both French and Canadian instructor ratings. His passion for aviation is readily apparent not only in all the ratings that he has (instructor, multi engine, seaplane, and aerobatics) but also that he can’t stop talking about it. His passion is contagious which can definitely be seen with the students he flies with.
Graham Horte
Class 4 Instructor
Graham was originally born in Edmonton and lived in Peace River for a short time, however he lived and gone to school here in Whitehorse for most of his life. After high school he enrolled in the Aviation Managment program at Yukon University in the fall of 2021. He started his flight training that same year and hasn’t looked back since. He has done all of his flight training at Alkan, and he completed his instructor rating in mid-July 2023. He loves flying and the outdoors in the Yukon. Some of his favorite activities are hiking and fishing around the territory.
Will Heissler
Class 3 Instructor
Will joined Alkan as a rampy while he did his instructor rating in April of 2022. He joined the flight school as a flight instructor in January of 2023. His love for flying translates to his passion for instructing. He loves seeing his students’ progress and succeed, from their first flight to their first job! He is truly a team player and has so much passion for flying and pursuing his dream career. His favorite part of instructing is sharing his knowledge and helping others experience the beauty of flight.
